Social Action
Naturally, we care very much about social issues that affect people who live in our community - and beyond. There are many formal and informal ways that we express this and we can only show a small number of examples here.
National Mission Team
The NMT was formed around 2000 and currently consist of a group of roughly ten Stonelaw members headed up by Janis Neil. Our intention is to bring to the attention of the congregation of Stonelaw some local examples of social injustice along with ways that they can help to make a difference.
One issue that causes us great concern is the plight of homeless people in our city. We mark Homelessness Sunday every January by raising awareness and money. Over the years we have collected thousands of pairs of socks, sets of underwear, hats, gloves and cans of soup for the Lodging House Mission. The LHM is based just off of the Gallowgate in Glasgow, in the heart of the Glasgow Barrowlands. We also make substantial donations to support the work of the LHM and Scottish Churches Housing Action.
Our support of the LHM continues a long tradition; Stonelaw members have provided financial and practical help to this wonderful organisation for many years; long before the NMT was formed. the LHM celebrates its centenary this year. The organisation has provided food and many other forms of care to countless homeless people in Glasgow.
We have also collected unwanted household items in good condition for Starter Packs Glasgow, an organisation which helps previously homeless people becomes established in a tenancy by providing essential household items.
The Well
A number of our members are involved at the Well, which is an initiative of the Presbytery of Glasgow, based in Pollockshields. The Well offers a drop-in facility with support, advice and opportunities to members of the local Asian community. For more information speak to George Morrison on Jean Mitchell or visit www.thewell.org.uk.
