What we're about

We worship God

At Stonelaw, we worship and rejoice in the God who created all things. Our God is loving and good. When we turned away from his love, and refused to live in his goodness, he sent his son Jesus Christ into the world.

In the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus, as proclaimed in the Scriptures, we find the good news of God's grace. God freely offers us forgiveness for our sins and the possibility of a new life in him.

We are a Christian community

We believe that God is calling a new people together in Jesus Christ. Christians are not simply individuals who believe, but we are called to be a community, growing, sharing and worshipping together. God has sent his Holy Spirit to renew us, and to empower us to share in God's mission of renewing all of creation.

In being baptised and in sharing the bread and wine together we declare that we belong to Jesus Christ and to each other. Women and men, children and adults, are all equally included in this belonging. We recite the creeds - declaring that our faith is shared with Christians down through the centuries and throughout the world today.

We are part of the Church of Scotland

We are a church in the Reformed tradition. That means we are constantly looking for the Word of God, contained in the Old and New Testaments, to shape and renew our life together. We take the Bible seriously.

It also means that we believe that every Christian is vital. God listens and relates to his children equally. Everyone can know God's grace and receive his Spirit. The Church is called to reflect that by encouraging everyone to play their part in our shared mission - whatever that part may be.

We are a Parish Church

Stonelaw does not exist for its members alone. We are charged by the Church of Scotland to serve all those who reside in our community. Whether you believe or not, we are here for you.

How we do this

We try to live out our beliefs in our life together.

  • Because we believe that God wants us to grow together, we have a programme of adult nurture in addition to our Sunday worship services. We also try to make prayer a priority.
  • Because we believe that God is a God of justice, we are committed to being a fairtrade church and to social action.
  • Because we believe we are part of a wider family of faith, we have an interest in the world church, as well as trying to work with other local congregations in Rutherglen.
  • Because we believe that God wants us to reach out with his love, we open our doors five mornings a week in The Meeting Place and we've recently employed Therese Reid to spearhead our work with the community.
  • Because we believe children matter, we have a large number of youth organisations, and we support the work of the Reachout Trust in our schools.
